Career Opportunity for SPM School Leavers - 2014

How to Attract, Focus & Retain The Most Talented Teachers?

Is there a fool-proof formula to attract, focus on and retain the best teachers?
PS: Please DO NOT take the literal meaning of breaking all the rules in order to be an exceptionally good manager. You may want to skim through the book before you jump into the "face-value" conclusion. It meant to say there's no one best method to deal with all talents, which is contrary to most Management Books.
With reference to The Gallup Organization's research in 1999, through First, Break All The Rules, written by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman; below are the 12 key questions you should ask yourself to identify if your company is doing a good job in attracting, focusing and retaining the most talented employees.

1. Do I know what is expected of me at work?
2. Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?
3. At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
4. In the last 7 days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?
5. Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?
6. Is there someone at work who encourages my development?
7. At work, do my opinions seem to count?
8. Does the mission/ purpose of my company make me feel my job is important?
9. Are my co-workers committed to doing quality work?
10. Do I have a best friend at work?
11. In the last 6 months, has someone at work talked to me about my progress?
12. This last year, have I had opportunities at work to learn and grow?

Above 12 questions are the simplest and most accurate way to measure the strength of a workplace.
All the above 12 questions are copied to share from an inspiring Talent Handbook First, Break All The Rules, written by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman, page 28.

Education - The Greatest Love of All

What is the greatest love of all?
Does education play an important role in this?
Enjoy this Whitney Houston's famous song delivered by Malaysia's very own Gary Chou in China's renowned singing contest, I Am A Singer 我是歌手. Decide for yourself how important an educator's role could play in anybody's life.

The greatest love of all, is the ability to love yourself.

"Greatest Love Of All"
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier

Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody's searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
[Chorus]
And if, by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

Is Kindergarten Teacher A Feel-Good Job?

What makes a feel-good job?
Is it a job with all the Highs and no Lows?
Is it a perfect job?
Or is it a job that any sane people would be willing to do with minimal or no pay?

Come on, be realistic. Perfect jobs do not exist.

So, is Preschool Teacher a FEEL-GOOD career?
What constitutes a FEEL-GOOD job anyway?

According to Dan Ariely
Motivation = Payment + Meaning + Creation + Challenge + Ownership + Identity + Pride + etc.
So do the simple math and logical reasoning yourself and ask if being a Preschool Teacher is what makes you feel good.

If it does make you feel good and way better than what other careers could have made you, why waste your lifetime doing something less satisfying?
